Craig and Sal Go Global

Sao Paulo

June 19, 2012

Sao Paulo is huge. 5th largest metropolis in the world huge. On our first day we went to a viewing platform on the 41st floor of a building downtown. We expected the city to stretch out to the horizon, but the way our whole vision was filled up with high-rise buildings was incredible.

Rodrigo was our CouchSurfing host in Sao Paulo. He is an illustrator and designer – all around a very creative guy. You can see some of his creations at his blog: hecho na china. His apartment was full of cool art pieces and interesting designs. Rodrigo created this hole in the wall with a sledgehammer when he wanted to open up his apartment. We also shared the apartment with Madeniusa, Rodrigo’s super-friendly cat.

A real highlight was joining some of Rodrigo’s friends for a traditional Sunday lunch. They cooked Moqueca de Peixe, a fish stew from Bahia (a state in Northern Brazil). Moqueca is cooked slowly in a large pan made from black clay. The meal was delicious and it was really lovely to be able to join them for the afternoon.

We’ve just arrived in Rio de Janeiro this afternoon. We’ll be here for the next four days and then we leave Brazil for Peru. We can’t wait to explore Rio, it’s been an amazing city so far.
