While 12 months sounds like quite a long time in which to to “see the world”, the world really is rather big.
There’s probably no “right” way to plan a trip like this. Well that’s what we’re hoping anyway - it can get overwhelming trying to factor in weather, tourist seasons, visas, holidays, festivals, fare rules, insurance coverage and travel pace - but more often it’s like a challenging and exciting puzzle.
A lot of this itinerary is flexible - it will be interesting to see what changes once we get “on the road”. So with that in mind, here is the route that we’ve come up with.
Our route takes us first to Chile, then through the Andes to Argentina.
We then head north, visiting Iguaçu Falls on the way to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
We fly from Rio to Cuzco, Peru – site of the lost Incan city of Machu Picchu.
We spend two weeks in Peru, before flying north to New York City and Washington D.C. in the Mid-Atlantic USA.
We land in London and head up through England until we reach Edinburgh, Scotland in time for the Edinburgh Festival. After that, we will get in a campervan and explore the Scottish Highlands.
Then it’s onto continental Europe, starting with France, Belgium and the Netherlands. After travelling south through Italy, we will catch a ferry to Dubrovnik, Croatia and go sailing up the Croatian coast, finishing our time in Croatia in Zagreb.
From Zagreb we head up to Munich and join the world’s largest fair: Oktoberfest. Then we head north through Central Europe – Austria and the Czech Republic before ending in Berlin, Germany.
We are only stopping briefly in the Middle East – first visiting Turkey and then Israel.
Kathmandu, Nepal is our first stop after which we head to Pokhara, Nepal to go trekking in the Himalayas. Our last stop in Nepal is Chitwan National Park, after which we cross the border into India.
The holy city of Varanasi is our first Indian destination, after which we head to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. We then tour the state of Rājasthān, including the princely cities of Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaiphur. We end our time in the Indian subcontinent in the Indian capital, Delhi.
We arrive in Bangkok, Thailand just before New Years’ Eve. The next five months are left free to explore Southeast Asia. We think we want to volunteer somewhere and settle into a community for 2-3 months. Apart from that, we’ll just follow our noses.
We leave Singapore to fly back to Wellington at the end of May 2013…

It will be awesome - but very exhausting! If you know anyone who you can stay with on root, or a hostel which is cheap and takes your fancy, it might be good to stay put and have sleep days to keep your energy up :) It will be so cool though!
